Reckless FRSC driver crashes van; leaves 3 athletes dead, scores injured

Three athletes were confirmed dead, several injured in a road accident involving the operational van of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zuru Unit Command, Kebbi State on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said the FRSC van was overloaded with athletes conveying them to Gamji, along Zuru-Rijau road; driving recklessly on the road close to a town called Amanawa.

The athletes were said to have taken off from the Zuru Township Stadium in the FRSC van to Gamji, a starting point for the annual marathon race of about 8 kilometres to the finishing line back in the Township Stadium Zuru.  

Masaudu Mangorori, one of the eyewitness said the driver of a vehicle behind the FRSC van tried to wave them down to reduce speed when suddenly, the van started swaying and eventually summersaulted with the overloaded athletes.

“We evacuated many of the victims to the nearby Army Barracks Clinic, Zuru, while others were taken to Martha Bamaiyi General Hospital, Zuru where three of them died,” he said.

 Abubakar Sadiq the coach of the athletes said one of the athletes died instantly, while two others died at the hospital.

Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Didiye Dada of the Police Motor Traffic Department (MTD), Zuru said the unit commander alerted them of the accident when it occurred in the morning.

“The FRSC van and an ambulance were conveying the athletes to the marathon staring point in Gamji. While on their way the rear shaft of the van pulled out, which resulted to summersault of the van where many were severely injured, three others died in the hospital,” she stated.

ASP Dada gave the names of those who lost their lives as Hauwa Ibrahim, Abdulrahman Abubakar and Bello Lawal Saidu.

“As I speak with you five of the FRSC personnel including the driver are among those injured are also receiving treatment in the hospital,” she added.

The Zuru Unit Commander of FRSC could not be reached for comment.

However, the van involved in the accident was immediately towed away from the scene of the accident by the FRSC operatives.

Ogun Police Nabs 4 Yahoo Boys Over The Murder of Their Friend

Nigeria – Operatives of Ogun state police command have arrested 4 suspected internet fraudsters over the murder of a 20 yrs old boy, Alexander Uzoma.
The suspects, according to the command spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, were arrested following the report lodged at Adigbe divisional headquarters by the mother of the victim, one Ogechi Alexander, who reported that her son Alexander left home on the 20th of November 2021 and did not returned.
“She reported further that her son told her that he was going to visit some of his friends whom she didn’t know.
“A case of missing person was subsequently incidented at Adigbe division, but when the whereabout of the victim remained a mystery after some days, the commissioner of police CP Lanre Bankole directed that the case be transferred to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.
“At the SCIID, the DSP Nurudeen AbdulGafar led Modus Operandi section, embarked on intelligence and technical investigation which led to identification of one Babatunde Owoseni as the person who was last seen with the victim, and he was promptly arrested.
“The said Babatunde later led policemen to arrest his co accomplices namely: Azeez Oyebanji a.k.a Biggy, Ayobami Adesina and Balogun Sulaiman.
“On interrogation, they confessed that the victim came to their house to learn about internet fraud, and after eating food, they all took a substance known as Colorado which made them to fall asleep.
“They confessed further that when they woke up at about 8 pm, they met the victim on the ground already vomited all over his body.
“When they tried to carry him, they discovered that he is no longer breathing.
“At that point, Azeez Oyebanji a.k.a Biggy from whom they bought the drug was invited, and he advised that they should throw the corpse away.
“It was then that Ayomide and Gafar arranged for Uber driver to come and when the driver came, Ayomide collected the vehicle from him and used it to carry the corpse to the top of Kuto overhead bridge where it was dumped.
“The corpse was later removed by the state health workers and buried as unknown corpse.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that there was a mark of violence on the head of the deceased as shown in the picture taken by the health workers before it was buried”, Oyeyemi explained.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole has ordered the investigating team to expedite action on the investigation and charge the case to court as soon as possible.

JUST-IN: OSCOHTECH’s Lecturers Embarks On 3-Days Warning Strike


The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) of Ogun State College of Health technology Ilese-Ijebu (OSCOHTECH) has instructed its members to embark on a three-day warning strike from Tuesday, December 21, 2021.

This decision was taken at an emergency congress of the union held on Tuesday, December 14th 2021 to deliberate on ASUP’s demands bordering on the smooth running of the first institution in Ogun State.

According to a communique issued at the end of the congress and signed by Yusuf-Babatunde M. A. and Igbokoyi Adeyemi, the Union’s chairman and general secretary respectively, the three-day warning strike will be between Tuesday to Thursday this week.

“At the emergency congress held on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the union after an extensive deliberation on her demands, which Management have failed to address will be embarking on a three-day warning strike from Tuesday, December 21, 2021,” the statement stated.

“Our demands in our correspondences to management are as follows: 1. That the 2017 promotion exercise was inconclusive because some members of staff are yet to receive their promotion letters. 2. That 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 are long overdue. 3. That the minimum wage implementation should no longer be delayed since it has received the state government blessings/approval. 4. That the migration exercise that received a policy summersault in our college should be revisited without further delay. 5. That scheme/condition of service should be released to the union so as to enable the members know the criteria for promotion on each level” the statement read.

“Conclusively, the union hereby give the management 3-days ultimatum to resolve item 1 and 3 above. Consequently, the union shall commence 3-days warning strike from Tuesday 21st December 2021. Other items afore-listed should equally be attended to on or before the end of the year (2021).”

With this development, academic activities will be paralysed at the institution for the remaining days of this year.

This is coming few days to the commencement of the 2nd Convocation exercise of the institution, expected to be held on December 21-22, 2021

Ogun Govt shuts down Sami Foods&Bar, Avodart Estate over Noise Pollution

The Ogun State Government through the Ministry of Environment under the supervision of the Special Adviser Mr. Ola Oresanya, on Sunday carried out Enforcement order on Sami Foods & Bar, Avodart estate located at Akute in Ifo local government area of the State.

In a statement by the media aides to the Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Environment, on Sunday in Abeokuta said, the affected premises were given two weeks notice prior to the sealing off of their premises .

While sealing off the premises, the Task force Chairman on Environmental Noise pollution who also doubles as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment Hon. Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde, expressed the desire of the Government of Prince Dapo Abiodun, Mfr, to have a friendly and peaceful Environment in the State. He further mentioned that the Governor is passionate to have an environment where there will be tolerance amongst the citizenry.

According to him, “no one no matter his/her status will be allowed to use his pleasure or business to constitute unpleasant sights/sounds at the discomfort of other member of the Society in the State”.

The SSA also used the opportunity to call on religious, business and recreational centres, to act in line with the state law on noise pollution, stating that, the ministry had earlier given two weeks notice to the affected premises but they declined to act accordingly.

The statement, however, added that, the Task force won’t relent on it efforts to get the state rid of Noise Pollutants as its promised to continue monitoring exercises in other Senatorial district, in the coming weeks.
